We went early this morning to transfer everything to a new truck in Medford. We got the new truck (which is a MONSTER), and started moving everything out of one and into the other. Since the first thing of one needed to be the last back into the other, we had stuff out all over the ground between the trucks. So, to fit with the trend of our move, after we had a bunch of furniture and boxes outside, it started to rain and sleet. We quickly tried to rush everything back inside the new truck that was outside, and spend the next couple hours running things between the trucks in the rain.
We did get it all loaded, and we even ended up with a free set of furniture pads that someone left without telling the Penske people that they were in the truck, so they just let us have them. If anyone needs to rent a truck, I highly recommend Boston North Penske in Medford. The people were really helpful and nice.
We got everything moved and set for driving in about 2.5 hours, then went to the storage unit and loaded everything (in the rain) that we’ve had in there for months since we started preparing the condo for staging. We then dropped of the car at Aunt Cyndi’s and went to get another load of stuff remaining in the condo (in the rain).
We finished off a lot of work with a beer and a fabulous meal from my uncle, Mark. And we got to spend a nice evening with the boys. They love the truck! I’ll try to post pictures of it tomorrow.
While we couldn’t fit everything in the old truck, the new one is definitely bigger than we need. But, that’s much better than too small. One thing I can say about driving a gargantuan vehicle is that it certainly does get more respect. We only got cut off once today! I think that may be a Boston record for us.
We may leave tomorrow if we can get everything cleaned up in here so that it’s ready for our agent to show again, but if we are getting to the afternoon and aren’t done, we’ll just stay another night since we aren’t planning on doing a lot of nighttime driving. We’ll see. I’m never, ever doing this again, but if I did, I’d allow myself a lot more time.
Grandma and I are following your travails and soon-to-be travels with interest. You must know that the rule is that it always rains when you have moving to do and boxes scattered around!
We were horrified to learn about the 50-car accident along your route on I-70 near Vail yesterday and glad you weren’t anywhere near there.
FYI – from the Denver Post: “Westbound I-70 traffic is being diverted at Copper Mountain and sent down U.S. 91 over Fremont Pass to Leadville. However, accidents and bad weather conditions have now clogged traffic on that two-lane road.
Colorado state troopers said the interstate isn’t expected to open for quite some time because of the amount of wreckage on the road and the length of time it will take to investigate.”
Drive carefully. We love you.

Wow – sounds like you’re ready to roll. You could really top off the Boston experience by making the classic mistake of heading out on Storrow and peeling the top off the truck! – G
Gabe – We actually almost did that! We jumped on Soldiers Field to go to Medford in the smaller truck and JUST made it under a bridge. They should really post signs a little earlier to warn you – like where it would be possible to actually turn off!
Non-existent or ineffective signage is one thing about Boston I certainly won’t miss. 🙂
